Horror Movie Picks for 2010

Last House on the Left(1972)
Notice the 1972, none of this remake bullshit. You can never remake one of classics like Last House on the Left. One of Wes Cravens first films paves the way for the rest of the horror masters career. What gets it for me with this movie is the just how it looks. It's got that whole snuff film thing going. Looks the like the whole thing was filmed by someone in the gang. That and the fact it makes your stomach turn the whole way thru makes Last House on the Left a must see with the lights off late at night.

Them
If you've seen the American counterpart The Strangers(Liv Tyler) then you'll the love this one. It's the French original based on true events that transpired in the french countryside. In Strangers they make it seem like it happened in America but it's based on events in France. It's pretty easy to find and it's worth the watch.

Hausu
I had to throw a Japanese movie on here and I didn't want to go with Takashi Miike like always. Although watch Gozu if you can this Halloween season. Anywho, this gem is from 1977 and apparently lsd was available over seas during that time as well. Hausu is about a haunted house that basically comes to life and murders it's occupants. In this scene we get to see what happens when you fuck with a pissed off lampshade. Good luck finding the whole movie on-line, you'll have to dig.

The Brood
My all time favorite horror movie. Some might say it's a weak vote but I say fuck those people! This movie delivers on so many levels. It's Cronenberg at his finest. The film was made in '79 and shoot entirely in Canada so you get some great scenery shots. The special fx are insane, Cronenberg at his finest as always. But the best part is the slow build and barf worthy pay off we get at the end. Enough fan boying.....

The Wicker Man(1973)
Again, notice the date. Nick Cage shit all over this classic a few years back. They did the story a small justice but Nick Cage bombed. So go with the original starring the great Christopher Lee. The whole movie is shot at the Isle of Whithorn, a tiny secluded fishing village on the Scotish coast and makes for beautiful scenery. Also, the whole thing has a physcadelic feel, so keep that in mind. The movie starts when a detective is called out from the city to investigate a missing person, possible murder. On the island though, all is not what it seems.

My Bloody Valentine
The 1981 slasher classic is a must for Halloween night! During the '80s movie studios were clamoring for the next big horror blockbuster i.e...Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th...
So with that came an over abundance of major and low budget productions of horror and slasher movies during the 80s. Pretty much anything that came out in the slasher genre between the years 1981-1988 was pure gold. My Bloody Valentine was one of the many holiday based horror flicks. I'm pretty sure they nailed everything right down to Flag Day back then. The thing I could never figure out about this one is why the killer is a coal miner. Huh.

Audition/Gozu
OK fuck it! I'm gonna toss in some Miike. This right here is a two for one deal. One of the all time thriller/horror/general mind fuck movies is Audition. Miike at his finest! The story centers on a widowed man who's looking to get back in the dating game. He works at TV station so him and a buddy decide to create a fake dating show and bring in woman for auditions, pick the best from there. The man makes his decison and little does he know he made the wrong choice. Never stick your dick in crazy.

And Gozu, how do you describe this Miike mind fuck. Well, just that. I would call it a japanese gangster version of Alice in Wonderland. What really happends when you go down the rabbit hole? It's so much a horror movie as it a weird and bizare tale of one mans insane mind. And as with most Miike movies, you're gonna get some milk. I warned you.
