It was 44 years ago today that the Monterey Pop Festival laid the ground work for many festivals to come. The weekend of June 16-18 of 1967 will be remembered as one of the greatest concerts in the history of music. From Hendrix lighting his guitar on fire to the virtually unknown at the time The Who to Ravi Shankar and headliners Jefferson Airplane....Monterey would go down in history. Most notably though is Janis Joplin's performance. At the time she was basically unknown to the majority of people and had no real big concert experience. She was backed by Big Brother & The Holding Co. and what took place was the official coming out party for the whiskey swigging Janis Joplin we all know today.
