Zappa Meets The Monkees
This past Saturday night I was up late burning the midnight oil and I stumbled upon a mini Monkees marathon on some channel. I sat thru the first one and decided to try and watch the second one. Good thing I hung in there because the second episode was "The Monkees Blow Their Mind" featuring Frank Zappa!! Zappa and Mike Nesmith, both shown above playing each other, were friends off the set. Nesmith being one of the only Monkees who had some actual musical chops was a big fan of Frank's music. I don't know if Frank liked the show but I assume the two liked each other enough for him to say yes, just seems like such an odd pairing. Frank agreed to do the show under one condition though, that he could "be" Nesmith and Nesmith, in turn, liked the idea, so long as he could "be" Zappa. The two wore cheap, exaggerated disguises and the interview was performed as if Mike was Frank and Frank was Mike. An early nod to what you would see in 200 Motels with Zappa and Ringo Starr. The clip cuts out as the two are making music by beating on a car but if you listen close you'll be able to hear Zappa's "Mother People" playing in the background.
