Deep-Fry Everything!!!!
In the land of deep fryers the state of Texas stands alone when it comes to making your heart stop in the middle of meal. The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo's Gold Buckle Foodie competition has become an epic event over the years and is well known for it's fatty and fried creations. It's the home of the deep fried Moon Pie, chocolate covered cheesecake on a stick, and the 4lb. burger. However, this year they've managed to step up their game a little bit with the Pterodactyl Wing(a slab of reconstructed beef, pieces plastered on top of each other and held together with barbecue sauce on a giant bone), deep fried Red Velvet cake, and fried cherry Kool-Aid. Yes, you read that right, deep fried Kool-Aid. My mouth was watering up to that point. The local food critic from the Houston Press described it as " a ball of cake dough soaked in what tasted like straight cherry-flavored syrup and then fried to a greasy, powdered sugar-topped mess." Pass.
The title for Most Creative and crowd favorite went to the Lemon Cream Frosty Bite, an ice cream filled cupcake. Other winners were the Fried Cookie Dough on a Stick for Best New Flavor and BBQ Pulled Pork Stuffed Baked Potato in the Classic Fair Food category. Classic? I can't ever remember seeing that kind of food at any fair I went to. Classic would be like cotton candy or an elephant ear. BBQ Pulled Pork Stuffed Baked Potato is just straight up genius!!! Now I'm hungry.
