So it seems that the 28 years run of Ween has come to an end. An ending that will leave a gap in a much needed niche of the music world. Gene Ween, real name Aaron Freeman, told Rolling Stone magazine that it was just time to move on and he's hanging up Gene for good. There's doesn't seem to be any bad blood between Gene and co-founder Dean Ween (Mickey Melchiondo) but Gene says that he's looking forward to moving in new directions with his solo projects closing the Ween chapter of his life,
"For me it's a closed book. In life sometimes, in the universe, you have to close some doors to have others open. There's no, 'Goddamn that such and such!' For me, I'd like to think it's a door I can close finally."
Gene's new solo album Marvelous Clouds dropped a few weeks back and consisted of a collection of Rod McKuen covers. His next effort will be all original tunes that will seperate him from his Ween alter-ego.
"It's important to know that this isn't a side project. I'm forging a new thing for myself. So that's all. There's no plans for any records or touring for Ween from my end."
It's a bummer to see them go but knowing that Ween split for the right reasons doesn't make me feel as sad.
I know for sure that we'll be honoring their musical legacy on an upcoming Gravy Podcast so keep an eye out for that. Instead of going on about my favorite song and why it's great let's just enjoy some sweet sounds!
