Kids of the '80s were treated to so many great cartoons back in the day but nothing beat all the short lived, live action Nintendo themed shows. I've payed homage to shows before like Nintendo Power which was a great show but The Super Mario Bros. Super Show has got it beat.
Just the fact that Capt. Lou Albano played Mario puts the show over the top. It was weird to see him without all the rubber bands hanging off his face. Luigi was played by actor Danny Wells who was best known for his role as 'Charlie the bartender' on The Jeffersons. The series only ran for one season between September and December in 1989 but they packed in 65 episodes. The Super Mario Bros cartoon aired four days a week, Monday through Thursday and on Friday an episode was based on The Legend of Zelda video game series instead of the Mario Bros cartoons.
Mario Bros. consisted of two segments, the live intro would lead into the cartoon featuring all the characters from Super Mario 1 & 2. Each episode featured a guest and a live studio audience. Most of the guests were well known '80s TV stars at the time like wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper Elvira Mistress of the Dark, and Nicole Eggert from Charles in Charge. The clip below features Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson helping the guys out with their slime problem.
Super Mario Bros Super Show Volume 1 Special Edition hit stores today and it features all the original episodes restored and a ton of extras.
