Man Takes Ambulance on Joyride
When EMTs in Longmont, CO showed up to a call for an elderly woman that fell down they weren't expecting someone to drive off in their ambulance. Turns out they shouldn't have left the keys in the ignition. Early Sunday morning paramedics were dispatched to a residence where an 86yr. old woman had taken a nasty tumble, pretty routine call. As the EMTs were inside working on the woman they heard a beeping noise outside coming from the ambulance. That beeping noise meant the ambulance was backing up but both the paramedics were inside and when they ran outside to investigate the emergency vehicle was peeling off down the street. The paramedics immediately got on their radio and called the police who didn't have any problem tracking down the truck. Officers chased the ambulance for about 6 blocks before the driver pulled over and ended the pursuit. Police took 51yr. old Robert Taylor into custody and said he was visibly drunk at the time of the arrest. Taylor's speech was slurred, had blood shot eyes, and could barely keep his balance while talking to the arresting officers. The police report says that Taylor was trying to get out of the cold and thought stealing the ambulance would be a good start. The report also stated that no supplies were missing out of the ambulance and no damage could be found to the outside of the truck. Taylor was charged with grand theft auto, driving under the influence, and was also nailed for an outstanding warrant for escaping from a Fort Collins correctional facility. I guess in the end his cunning plan worked though, he now has a warm place to sleep and will be getting 3 hot meals a day with his new cellmate.
