The Best of Mr.G
If you don't know who Chris Lilley is then you're missing out. He hails from down under and in my opinion is one of the best new comedic minds. He's a master of the mocku-mentary, think Christopher Guest(Mighty Wind, Spinal Tap, Waiting For Guffman) but Lilley takes it to a whole new level. Where Guest is more conservative in his material Chris Lilley steps over all the lines. Be it the strong language or just the characters themselves, he takes you into a world created to reflect what he sees and what is really happening around him. He got his start doing TV in Australia and decided to take things to the next level and started creating his own shows. His first hit was with 'We Can Be Heroes' which follows 6 Austrialians who are competing for the prize of "Austrialian of the Year". Each character is played by Lilley and he nails all of them. Be it man, woman, or child. He seems to like playing teenagers and I have to say he's spot on in his characterazations.
Then he truly came to form and gained the most notiriety with 'Summer Heights High' which takes place in an Austrialian school and follows the lives of 2 students and a choir/theatre teacher. The teacher being Mr. G in the video above. His latest creation which debuted on HBO 2 weeks ago is 'Angry Boys'. Again, it follows the lives of 6 different characters as they navigate their lives. Twin brothers Daniel and Nathan, Gran the jail guard, S.Mouse a spoiled fake gangster rapper he plays in black face, Blake a washed up champion surfer, and of course Jen, the mom of a famous Japanese teen skateboarder. He plays all his characters so well, he develops each one in a way it's hard at times to distiguish between who's real and who's not. If you have HBO I highly recommend you catch up with 'Angry Boys' and do your best to track down the rest. The video above is the best of Mr.G, the flamboyant and dictator-like theatre teacher from 'Summer Heights High', probably my favorite character he does.
