Yes, this was a real thing and I imagine it was as bad as it looks. Back in 1996 a group of martial artists hit the road to remind people that not all martial arts are the same as what you see in the Mortal Kombat video game and movie. They wanted people to know that karate didn't consist of having your spine ripped out or having a spear on the end of a rope thrown through your chest. This was at a time when parents were convinced that all violent video games made kids violent. Well, I guess that debate still rages on but that's for another post. Come for the dazzling display of martial arts and stay for Shang Tsung telling the host to respect Sonja Blade for her skills not her smoking hot body.
